End of Term Journal

August 1966

We are glad to report that Miss Henry is well again after her long illness. Mrs. M. Toomey who was relieving teacher has to leave because of her husband's transfer to Switzerland, but we were fortunate to obtain the services of Mrs. J. Parkhill, an experienced and qualified Nursery teacher of the deaf, for the remainder of Miss Henry's absence.

Andrew Cameron of Leichhardt commenced in the Nursery this term.

Highlight of this term was the Children's Play Night on July 29th when all the pupils took part in plays. The repertoire was "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", "The Organ Grinder", "The 12-6 Wise Man of Gotham", and "Robin Hood". Over 200 people attended the Play Night and we do thank them all for the interest.

Training Course for Teachers of the Deaf.

Miss L. Bennett, the lecturer, has been into the school on many occasions with the training course. For three weeks the students came daily for individual speech work under Miss Bennett's supervision; they then went into Sydney Teachers' College for their morning lectures.

Mrs. P. Manning, Miss J. Sim, Miss J. Taynor and Miss J. Campbell spent three weeks at the school for practice teaching.

All the teachers gave demonstrations of the teaching of reading to fit in with Miss Walter's course of lecturers on "Teaching of Reading to Deaf Children" at Sydney Teachers' College.

We welcome Mr. W. Parr back from his six months' trip; we appreciated the many postcards and reports he sent us while he was overseas.

The training course also visited the school one evening to meet the Farrar Ex-Students' union.

Profession Association

Miss Walter has been elected Vice-President of the Australian Association of teachers of the Deaf.

Mr. A.C. Bray, of the Sydney Teacher College Language Research Centre, visited the school and led a staff meeting on language. Following on this Farrar teachers are pursuing some lines of language research on co-operation with Mr. Bray.

Miss Walter has acted as External Examiner for practical work for the Lipreading Teachers' Certificate of the Australian Association for Better Hearing.

Excursions and Liaison with Other Schools

The children entered work in the Campise Branch Library competition during Children's Book Week in July. Three classes went to see the book exhibition at the Library. Susan Kendall, aged 11, and Donna Smith, aged 12, won book tokens for their scrap pictures of "Hiawatha"

The senior class went on an excursion to the Observatory on the evening of the May 27th, a group of Children visited Nestle's factory during the May Vacation and went over Fort Denison on Saturday July 16th. Parents have attended these excursions as well as teachers.

Miss Walter visited Kogarah High O.D. Classes and Burwood Primary O.D. Classes and the Department of Education Evening College Lipreading Classes. Mrs. Chan visited Croydon Park Primary School and Miss Henry visited Chatswood and Roseville Primary O.D. Classes. We appreciate the kindness of the Principals and teachers of these schools for allowing our teachers to observe their work.

Ashfield Rotary has donated money for framed Art pictures for the school to extend children's appreciation of art. Mrs. M. Vogan, formerly the School Inspector and Mr. T. Hughes, Q.C. the Local M.P., each donmated money for a picture as part of this Art Project. Mr. Binns has selected the pictures.

Ultimo and Haberfield Primary Schools both assisted us by loaning us parts of the stage for our Children's play night.

Arrangements have been made a group of the children to visit the aerodrome with Qantas during the August Holidays.

Our children send paintings to the International Children's Art Festival in Los Angeles. These paintings are sold to raise funds for the John Tracy Clinic of which some of our pupils were "correspondence babies"

Our pupils have donated money for the purchase of powdered milk for children in the school for the Deaf, Madras, South India.

We congratulate the North Shore O.D. group on Vol. 1, Nos. 1 and 2, of "Contact". We appreciate receiving, and invited to contribute material to this worthy new journal.

Junior Red Cross

The Junior Red Cross circle entered craft, done under the supervision of the Patron, Mrs. B. Chan, in the Annual Exhibition in the Sydney Town Hall on July 20th and 21st. All the members went to see the Exhibition. Peter Dunn, aged 13, Alexander Ramsay, aged 12, and Garry Knight, aged 12, won certificates for their craft work.

Garden and Grounds

Our three wattle trees were in full bloom for Wattle Day on August 1st and were all able to wear sprigs of wattle from our own trees.

Unfortunately, the woody pear tree the children planted on Arbor Day was stolen one night.

Some of the fathers have given valuable help in the garden this term.

Sport

Mr. McGree has represented the school at the Burwood District Committee of the P.S.A.A.A. to arrange the district Primary Athletics Carnival.

The weekly sports afternoon at the school has continued during the winter term.

Parents and Citizens' Association

Mr. P. Ailwood, School Counsellor of the Deaf, addresses the mothers at an afternoon meeting on June 3rd, explained the nature of his work.

At the June meeting of the P. and C., Mrs. Chan, Mr. Binns, Mr. McGree and Miss Walter formed a panel to discuss the Social Studies Curriculum as used in this school.

At the July meeting a talk was given by Sergeant Pollock on the work of the Police Boys' Club and the activities deaf boys could join.

Miss Hileen Whitehouse, teacher at the Longwill Day School for the Deaf, Birmingham, England, and Executive member of the Midland Branch of the National College of Teachers of the Deaf, England, addresses the August P. and C. meeting. She talked to members about Longwill School and then answered many questions members asked about education of the deaf in Great Britain.

Delegates of the P. and C. have attended meetings of the Western Suburbs Council of P. and C. Associations (mr. Williams) and the Council of Social Services (Mrs. Wordley). At the Federation for Junior Deaf Education of which Mrs. Wordley has been re-elected Minuting Secretary, our President, Mrs. B. Kendall, supported by other elected at the monthly meetings, has represented us regularly.

Mrs. S. Read, Publicity Office, gave a radio talk about "Farrar School". Mrs. Read has also been responsible for information articles about school appearing in "Western Suburb Courier", "Aeroplane Press", "Campise News" and "The Parent and Citizen".

Parents have again been made welcome this term to visit classrooms and see their own children in class.

Our President, Mrs. B. Kendall, Secretary, Mrs C. Hannah, and Treasurer, Mr. A.E.R. Knox, represented our P. and C. at the Official Opening of Education Week by the Minister of Education Mr. Cutler.

Money raised by a group of hearing children in Earlwood has resulted in sets of classroom dictionaries being purchased for four of the classrooms. This was an expensive project which could not have been realised without these children's help. The whole project was actually paid for by these children.

Our Secretary, Mrs. C. Hannah, represented our P. and C. at the Official Opening of Children's Book Week by Lady Cutler.

The co-operation of the P. and C. in attending and helping arrange excursions is resulting in a truly extra-curricular programme from which the Farrar Pupils, and their hearing brothers, sisters and friends, are gaining many profitable experiences.

Ex-Students' Union

A very pleasant Ex-Students' dinner was held at the Bistro n June 26th. Miss Burns, Miss Walter and Miss Henry attended the dinner.

Monthly meetings have been held at the school including one joint meeting of the Ex-Students' union and the Training Course for Teachers of the Deaf.

Extra folding chairs have been purchased by Ex-Students' Union for use at their own meetings and for the use of the School in general.

Personal news of ex-students included the birth of a son, Peter Edwards, to Mrs. Kathleen Cobett (nee Mautner), the engagement, and marriage plans for November 5th, of Miss Sue Donelan to Mr Dennis Sunniford of New Zealand, and the marriage of Miss Ann Barwick to Mr. John Bennett. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett invited many Farrar Ex-Students to their wedding. Their honeymoon was spent in Queensland and they are now living in Penrith.

Mr. Robert Noonan and Mr. Terry Richards went on a motoring trip to the Snowy Mountains. There was no snow but they had to turn back one mile short of the summit of Mount Koscuisko because of mud.

Miss Ann McDowsell and Miss Dianne Ahrens went on a ten-day cruise on the "Marconi": to Suva, Noumea and Tonga. They found Tonga most interesting, the people there were still in mourning for the late Queen Salote.

Mr. Michael Gibson is back from New Zealand where he had been on a working holiday for nearly a year.

Miss Auriel Kerr completed her course at the Metropolitan Business College and is now a typist in the Land Titles Branch of the Registrar-General's Department.

Miss Judith Wordley is now doing factory work which she finds is much less of a rush and much better hours than pastry cooking.

Miss Jennufer Luke recently went on a three weeks' holiday to Darwin and Alice Springs by coach.

Miss Beverly Grigg and her family are moving to Forbes.

Mr. David Lynn is studying the Preliminary Accountancy Course through the Department of Technical Education External Studies. He works in the accounts section of Oversea Telecommunication.

Miss Marilyn Conn is working at Patrons Electrical and is studying Tracing at Sydney Technical College. She gained 78% in her First Term examination.

Mr. Richard John Stedman is now employed as a clerk in the Staff Department of Qantas.
