FARRAR PUBLIC SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF

SIGNIFICANT DATES AND EVENTS

1946:

Farrar Day School for Deaf Children founded my Miss Alice Dorothy Burns as a private oral school for deaf children with an enrolment of four pupils in two rooms rented from St. James Church, Croydon. The school was named in honour of Abraham Farrar (1861-1944), a deaf Englishman known for promoting the cause of deaf people

1948:

Miss Elsie Cole appointed co-principal

1949:

Relocation of school to a terrace house in Liverpool Road, Ashfield
Visit by Helen Keller.

1952:

School purchased by N.S.W. Government to become the first N.S.W. Department of Education School for Deaf Children.

1963:

New school built and opened at its present site in Croydon Avenue, Croydon Park.

1964:

Miss Jean Walter appointed principal.

1968:

Mr Ross Shaw appointed principal.

1973:

Mr Alan Dixon appointed principal.

1976:

Miss Lesley Geoghegan appointed principal.

1979:

Miss Margaret Cadby appointed principal.

1980:

Total Communication introduced.

1985:

Mrs Helen Nicholson appointed to Farrar as first deaf teachers aide employed by N.S.W. Department of Education.

1988:

25th Anniversary of Farrar at Croydon Park site.

1991:

Death of Miss Burns. Memorial Service held at Farrar.

1994:

Miss Karen Vine appointed principal.

1996:

50th Anniversary of Farrar at Croydon Park site.

2000:

Farrar Public School for the Deaf close down.
